Knockout Panel
- Knockout Panel
-
Knockout Panel is a predefined, removable section in a building component, such as a wall, panel, or electrical box, designed to be easily removed to allow for future expansion, installation of additional services, or access to utilities.
Where You’ll Find Knockout Panels
- Electrical boxes and panels: The round or rectangular slugs on the sides of junction boxes and breaker panels. Electricians punch them out with a screwdriver and hammer to run conduit or cable into the box.
- Foundation walls: Precast or formed concrete panels with scored sections that can be broken out later for utility penetrations (water, sewer, HVAC).
- Drywall and partition walls: Sections framed and finished but designed for easy removal if a future doorway, window, or pass-through is needed.
Practical Example
A commercial tenant build-out spec calls for a future server room expansion. The architect places a knockout panel in the demising wall so the tenant can open it up later without structural demo. On the electrical side, the panel box ships with a dozen knockouts so the electrician only opens the ones needed for the current circuit runs.
